IV Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the odds of another fight on stage just went way up. It might be the 2023 Oscars, but Jimmy Kimmel isn’t done talking about last year’s awards show. The Oscars host addresses the elephant in the room, the now infamous moment when Will Smith slapped Chris rock.
Jimmy Kimmel makes light of the shocking slap during his monologue at the 95th academy awards without ever name checking Will or Chris. If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19 minutes long speech.

The host also jokes that if you want to get to him, you’ll have to go through some of his famous friends, including his late night sidekick. You’re going to have to go through my right hand man Guillermo, if you want to get up to this stage. Wait a minute. Hold on. I should say the other Guillermo, not del turo. Yes, that one. Okay. There you go.
Jimmy Kimmel addresses the slap again when he introduces the documentary feature category, which is the category Chris Rock was presenting last year when the slap went down. Hopefully, this time it goes off without a hitch, or at least without hitch. Of course, the unscripted moment took audiences by surprise in 2022 when Will Smith approached the stage slapping Chris rock during the live broadcast after Rock made a joke about Will’s wife, Jada pinkett Smith.
Will later resigned from the academy, and the following month, the organization banned the star from the award show for a decade. In July, Will publicly apologize to Chris in a video posted to instagram. I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here when ready to talk. Chris Rock recently broke his silence on the moment during his Netflix comedy special when he claimed that Will practices, quote, selective outrage.
