Matthew Perry is reflecting on the valuable support he got from Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston. The sitcom star sat down with Diane Sawyer for an in-depth interview about his forthcoming memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, as well as his struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. Review clip released ahead of the interview, which will air in full on ABC next Friday. Matthew said that Jennifer kept up with him during his battle and it’s something he really appreciated. “She was the one that reached out the most and, you know, I’m really grateful to her for that”.
Diane also brought up a story from Matthew Perry’s book where he said Jennifer confronted him about his drinking. “Jennifer says we know you’re drinking”. Yeah, imagine how scary and all of that was Matthew replied. Matthew recently told People magazine how all his Friends co-stars were there for him through it all, saying they were understanding and they were patient. “It’s like penguins in nature. When one is sick or very injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up and walk around until that penguin can walk on its own. And that’s kind of what the cast did for me.”
Matthew Perry also told People why he felt now was the right time to write the memoir, saying, “I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again. I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people.”
