George Clooney’s proposal to Amal Clooney did not go off without a hitch during his appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday, the Ticket to paradise actor recounted the moment he asked the human rights barrister to marry him, which was not how he envisioned it. George Clooney said he wanted to surprise her during the dinner at home while advent Rosemary Clooney’s romantic song Why Shouldn’t I? It was playing in the background.
It’s a great song. So I’ve got it all planned out. I’ve got the ring and a little drawer behind her. I’ve made dinner and we don’t have been dating for about six months. I’ve got the ring in the box and the song starts, George Clooney said. The Ocean’s Eleven star came up with the perfect excuse for emulsifying the ring. George added I go, you know, I think there’s a lighter because I’d like to relight the candle, which I blew out. Relight the candle. I think there’s a lighter in that little box behind. When she opened the box, she saw a ring instead.
But at first, it didn’t click for her that George was proposing. George said There’s a diamond ring in there and she looks at it and she’s like, there’s a ring in there. Somebody left a ring there years ago. And I’m like, on my knee, like. George stayed kneeling, waiting for an answer, long past the romantic song and far into his playlist. She’s just sitting there like going, oh, my God, oh, my God. And I literally said, listen, I really would like to marry you, but I also am not young and I’ve been on my knee now and I could, like, lose a hip, George added.

George and Amal got engaged in 2014 and tied the knot in Venice later that year. In 2017, the two welcomed twins Ella and Alexander. Their daughter and son turned five this summer and already seemed to have picked up their dad’s sense of humor and penchant for mischief.
